On Wednesday, February 25, 2026 the Visual Effects Society (VES), the VFX industry’s professional global honorary society, held its 24th Annual VES Awards at The Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles, California.
Encompassing 25 categories across film, television, technology, gaming, special venue, student projects, and more, the night’s biggest winner was Avatar: Fire and Ash, which took home seven awards in total, including the top prize of Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature. Additional wins for Avatar: Fire and Ash included Outstanding Character in a Photoreal Feature for Varang (played by Oona Chaplin, who was on hand at tonight’s awards as a presenter), Outstanding CG Cinematography, and the Emerging Technology Award, given to the Kora Fire Toolset.
In the animation categories, KPop Demon Hunters led the night with three awards, including the top prize of Outstanding Animation in an Animated Feature, and Outstanding Character in an Animated Feature for Rumi.
Rounding out the top category wins, Sinners won the award for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age won for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode, and BMW’s Heart of Joy: Meet Okto the Octopus won for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Commercial.
Additional winners at the 24th Annual VES Awards included the video game Ghost of Yōtei (Outstanding Visual Arts in a Real-Time Project), Andor (Outstanding Special (Practical) Effects in a Photoreal Project), and Azimuth (Outstanding Visual Effects in a Student Project).

Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature
This award is to honor the overall achievement of the visual effects within a Photoreal Feature where the visual effects are a visible, essential, and integral part of the story and play a principal and active role in the motion picture. A rule of thumb for defining whether a motion picture would be considered effects-driven would be to ask if the story could be told without the active participation of extensive digital effects, Special Effects, effects-enhanced stunts, or nonhuman CG characters. On the whole, effects-driven features may be “tent-pole” or “independent”, but they would not be possible to make without visual effects and the general public would easily identify the VFX.

Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature
This award is to honor the overall achievement of the invisible or near-invisible visual effects within a Photoreal Feature wherein the visual effects support the visual storytelling, but do not play a protagonist role moving the plot forward. Supporting visual effects are generally used to help create the setting, environment, or mood of the film and may include extensive recreations of realistic historical settings. They may include set or lighting changes, CG or practical real vehicles, naturalistic alterations to actors, limited naturalistic action sequences and destruction, minor surrealistic or expressionistic effects, and supporting CG performances limited to those that help create the setting, environment, or mood of the film (i.e., background elements). Limited naturalistic action sequences and destruction are allowed only if they are not critical to the story. Features whose stories cannot be told without the active participation of extensive digital effects, Special Effects, effects-enhanced stunts, heavily altered characters, or nonhuman CG characters – are NOT permitted in this category.

Outstanding Environment in a Photoreal Feature
This award is to honor the overall achievement of a single created environment in a photoreal motion picture that best creates an illusion of setting for the story being told. Created environments are defined as either completely artificial environments, or the significant enhancement of an existing practical set or location through the addition of elements not present during photography. The environment may occur more than once in the project and under different conditions, but must be the same environment, created by the exact same team.
This category judges not only the techniques for creating the environment, but also their integration with any practical plate photography. Before & Afters must show the development, construction, and integration of the multiple elements used to create the single continuous environment.
