Bret Culp

I am a Visual Effects Supervisor and Second Unit Director with over 30 years of experience leading story-driven visual effects for premium film and television. I have contributed to more than 60 feature films and series worldwide, working with directors, showrunners, and producers from pre-production through final delivery.

I studied Film and Photography at Toronto Metropolitan University, formerly Ryerson, and advanced quickly into senior artist roles at leading Toronto studios. My title design for TekWar earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Graphic Design and Title Sequences and won a PromaxBDA Award.

I spent 16 years at C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures, where I ultimately led the visual effects division and helped grow the studio into an internationally recognized facility, building and mentoring teams while advancing both creative standards and technical capability across a broad slate of film and television work.

As a VFX Supervisor, I am known for clear communication, steady leadership, and strong editorial judgment. I work with directors and key departments across production to realise creative intent, collaborating to find the most efficient way to achieve the shared vision.

Recent highlights include supervising visual effects on The Fall of the House of Usher, which debuted as Netflix’s number one global series, as well as The Expanse, which was named the number one TV show on Rotten Tomatoes’ 2020 Winter TV Scorecard with a 100 percent Tomatometer rating. I also served as both VFX Supervisor and Second Unit Director on The Tudors, which received multiple Gemini Awards for Best Visual Effects.

I am a member of the Directors Guild of Canada and the Visual Effects Society, and I regularly serve as a juror, lecturer, and advisor on industry panels and committees.

Alongside my film work, I maintain an active fine art photography practice focused on impermanence, memory, and time. This parallel discipline informs how I see, compose, and evaluate images.
