SUMMARY:Screening - TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH (Los Angeles)
DESCRIPTION:VES Members And A Guest Are Invited To An Academy Screeing Of TWELVE O’CLOCK HIGH with special guests\, VES Founters Award-winner and Board member Craig Barron and Ben Burtt \nClick here to RSVP\n	Saturday\, August 16\, 2014 at 7:00PM\n	Linwood Dunn Theater at the Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study\n	1313 Vine Street\, Los Angeles\, CA 90028\n	(Free parking off Homewood Avenue\, one block North of Fountain)\n	Click here for a map \nBased on the true story of the 306th Bombardment Group of the Eighth Air Force\, TWELVE O’CLOCK HIGH offers a dramatic glimpse of the group of aviators who flew daylight bombing missions against Nazi Germany and occupied France during the early days of American involvement in World War II. Co-writer Beirne Lay\, Jr. brought his own wartime experiences to bear in the screenplay\, and the film was one of the first to present a more realistic view of the enormous difficulties faced by bomber crews during WWII. Instead of using extensive special effects to create the aviation action\, the filmmakers included combat footage that was actually filmed in the skies over Europe by U.S. Air Force and German Luftwaffe photographers. Legendary stunt pilot Paul Mantz crash-landed an actual B-17 bomber for the opening scene in the film. Dean Jagger received an Academy Award for Supporting Actor for his work in TWELVE O’CLOCK HIGH\, which also won an Oscar for Sound Recording and was nominated for Best Picture. Star Gregory Peck received his fourth Best Actor nomination for his performance as the group’s dedicated leader. \n1949\, 133 minutes\, black and white\, 35mm | Directed by Henry King; written by Sy Bartlett and Beirne Lay\, Jr.\, based on their novel; with Gregory Peck\, Hugh Marlowe\, Gary Merrill\, Millard Mitchell\, Dean Jagger\, Robert Arthur\, Paul Stewart\, John Kellogg. \nCraig Barron has contributed visual effects to more than 100 films including THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK\, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and HUGO. He earned an Oscar® nomination for his work on Batman Returns and received an Oscar and a BAFTA for Visual Effects for THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON. \nBen Burtt’s first two Oscars® were Special Achievement Awards for the creation of the alien\, creature and robot voices featured in STAR WARS and for Sound Effects Editing for RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. SUMMARY:Screening - THE RIGHT STUFF (Los Angeles)
DESCRIPTION:VES Members And A Guest Are Invited To An Academy Screeing Of THE RIGHT STUFF with special guests\, VES Founters Award-winner and Board member Craig Barron and Ben Burtt \nClick here to RSVP\n	Sunday\, August 17\, 2014 at 7:00PM\n	Linwood Dunn Theater at the Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study\n	1313 Vine Street\, Los Angeles\, CA 90028\n	(Free parking off Homewood Avenue\, one block North of Fountain)\n	Click here for a map \nBased on Tom Wolfe’s bestselling book\, director Philip Kaufman’s four-time Oscar-winning film follows the history of the military’s aeronautical research at Edwards Air Force Base\, led by Chuck Yeager\, and the struggles of the seven test pilots selected to be the astronauts of Project Mercury\, the first attempt at manned spaceflight by the United States. Made before computer generated imagery (CGI)\, the production started its visual effects sequences using conventional motion control cameras and technology that was developed for STAR WARS (1977). Kaufman rejected these early efforts as “too clean\, smooth and composed\,” however\, prompting visual effects supervisor Gary Gutierrez and his team to employ more unconventional techniques such as using a cross-bow catapult to hurl models of F-104s into a sky filled with “clouds” created by insecticide foggers. The blending of these kinetic techniques with full-scale mock-ups and stock footage allowed for exciting action sequences that were seamlessly integrated into a documentary style and resulted in a movie that is now considered by many to be the definitive film on test pilot aviation and early space exploration. \n1983\, 193 minutes\, color\, 35mm | Directed and written by Philip Kaufman\, based on the novel by Tom Wolfe; with Sam Shepard\, Scott Glenn\, Ed Harris\, Dennis Quaid\, Fred Ward\, Barbara Hershey\, Kim Stanley\, Veronica Cartwright. \nCraig Barron has contributed visual effects to more than 100 films including THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK\, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and HUGO. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason’s parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha\, BOYHOOD charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent\, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay’s Yellow to Arcade Fire’s Deep Blue. BOYHOOD is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It’s impossible to watch Mason and his family without thinking about our own journey. \n  \nRun time: 164 minutes

In a changing room that resembles a casualty ward\, Warbrick draws breath and leads a stirring haka.   Made by brothers Pere and Meihana Durie\, Warbrick inspired the All Blacks the day before a 33-6 demolition of Australia in 2009.\n		 \n\n Day Trip (director Zoe McIntosh\, writer Costa Botes/Bill Payne\, Producer Costa Botes/Gareth Moon)\n A gang member wakes up one morning and decides he needs a day off. Inspired by a newspaper advertisement he impulsively decides to take a short ferry trip between islands.  With his tattooed face\, black leather clothing\, and prominent  gang patch\, the gangster is a fish out of water when he arrives in the idyllic small port town of Picton. The experience he has there will change his outlook on life forever.\n		 \n\n Double Happy (director/writer Shahir Daud\, producers Shivali Gulab & Andrew Brettell)\n This short film finds four 90s teenagers caught in the vicissitudes of growing up in Hutt Valley suburbia. Rising tensions during a day hanging out at the local park see misfit Rory ignite a cracker bag of cravings for belonging\, furtive sexual feelings\, violence\, racism and boredom. The combustive results of his misdirected teen spirit give the film’s title a grim irony. Fijian-born director Shahir Daud based the story loosely on his own teen experiences; Double Happy screened at Montreal Film Festival and was a Short of the Week website pick in May 2011\n		 \n\n Ebony Society (writer/director Tammy Davis\, producers Ainsley Gardiner & Chelsea Winstanley)\n Vinnie and his friend Jonah spend their nights on the streets of South Auckland tagging and stealing.  One night Vinnie has had enough. He tries to break away from his overbearing friend but is drawn back in when Jonah threatens and humiliates him.  When they break into a house and find themselves confronted with an unexpected situation it will be a test of their friendship\, forcing Vinnie to take the lead and show Jonah another way.\n		 \n\n Snow in Paradise (director/writer Nikki Si’ulepa & Justine Simei-Barton\, producer Paul Simei-Barton)\n A snapshot of life on a remote\, picturesque island in the south Pacific through the eyes of a young Polynesian girl.  As she ventures out on her daily routine she encounters the familiar faces of her family and the small community that she loves.  Like her\, they are all unsuspecting of the devastating power that lies beyond the ocean reef in a nuclear testing facility. In one moment her world will change forever.\n		 \n\n Meathead (director/writer Sam Holst\, producer Desray Armstrong/Chelsea Winstanley)\n In this award-winning short film Michael is a 17-year-old who gets the abattoir blues during his first day at ‘the works’. Fitting in turns out to be the least of Michael’s worries as young blood is welcomed on the line in the old fashioned way\, and rite of passage is interpreted literally to meaty effect. Meathead was filmed at the Wallace Meat plant in Waitoa. Based on the true story of a mate of his\, director Sam Holst’s debut short was selected for Cannes and won the Crystal Bear in the Generation (14plus) section of the 2012 Berlin Film Festival.\n

SUMMARY:Screening - BOYHOOD (New Zealand)
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of IFC Films and local distributor Universal Pictures International and with the generous participation of Reading Courtenay Place VES Members are invited to a special screening of Richard Linklater’s Boyhood. \n\n	This event has been organised by the distributors and requires an RSVP direct to them in order to secure access/a seat. \n\n	RSVPS ARE NOT AVAILABLE THROUGH VES \n\n	time + date: 10am Sunday 5 October \n\n	venue: Cinema 3\, Reading Courtenay Place Cinemas \n\n	Please rsvp to: mailto:victoria@bluecatpictures.com.au \n\n	Boyhood – a fictional drama made with the same group of actors over a 12 year period from 2002-2013 – takes a one of a kind trip\, at once epic and intimate\, through the exhilaration of childhood\, the seismic shifts of a modern family and the very passage of time.\n	The film tracks 6 year-old Mason (Ellar Coltrane) over life’s most radically fluctuating decade\, through a familiar whirl of family moves\, family controversies\, faltering marriages\, re-marriages\, new schools\, first loves\, lost loves\, good times\, scary times and a constantly unfolding mix of heartbreak and wonder. But the results are unpredictable\, as one moment braids into the next\, entwining into a deeply personal experience of the incidents that shape us as we grow up and the ever-changing nature of our lives.\n	As the story begins\, dreamy-eyed primary schooler Mason faces upheaval: his devoted\, struggling\, single mother Olivia (Patricia Arquette) has decided to move him and older sister Samantha (Lorelei Linklater) to Houston – just as their long absent father Mason Sr. (Ethan Hawke) returns from Alaska to re-enter their world. Thus begins life’s non-stop flux. Yet through a tide of parents and stepparents\, girls\, teachers and bosses\, dangers\, yearnings and creative passions\, Mason emerges to head down his own road. \n\n	Written and directed by Richard Linklater and produced by Linklater\, Jonathan Sehring\, John Sloss and Cathleen Sutherland. Cinematography by Lee Daniel and Shane F Kelly\, Edited by Sandra Adair with Production Design by Rodney Becker and Gay Studebaker.  \n

SUMMARY:Event - Digital Projection: From 12fps to 120fps (Los Angeles)
DESCRIPTION:VES Members And Their Guests Are Invited To Attend Digital Projection: From 12FPS To 120FPS\, Presented By Jonathan Erland \n  \nClick here to RSVP\n	Monday\, October 6\, 2014 at 6:30PM\n	Reception at 6:30PM\, program begins at 7:30PM\n	The Linwood Dunn Theater at the Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study\n	1313 Vine Street\, Hollywood\, CA 90028\n	Click here or a map. \n	This presentation by VES Fellow Jonathan Erland explores the capabilities made possible by the advent of high frame-rate digital projection. With film projection in decline\, digital projection will have to enhance its abilities to include various frame rates. There will be demonstrations of clips ranging from THE DANCING PIG (France – 1907) at 16 fps to OKLAHOMA!  (Todd AO-70mm) 30 fps and even Showscan’s NEW MAGIC at 60 fps. \n	Based upon the concepts of the silent film projection research\, the larger question of the creative importance of frame rate variations will be discussed. Exploiting the new capabilities provided by Barco and Qube Cinema\, we explore many variations of frame-rates from the teens to the maximum DCI rate of 120 fps. We’ll explore how we perceive moving images\, and confront received notions such as “persistence of vision” with recent discoveries. We’ll challenge the notion that we need a single\, standard frame  rate –  i.e. 36\, 48\, 60\, frames per second –  for all films\, or even across a single film\, and invoke evolving technology that will permit much greater flexibility and freedom with respect to frame rate\, reminiscent of our early film heritage. \n  \nPlease arrive at least 30 minutes early. Events are overbooked to compensate for no-shows. Seating is limited and will be available on a first come\, first served basis. An RSVP does not guarantee seating. \n  \nFor more information about this Event\, please contact: Anthony Magliocco <Anthony@emtminfo.com>
