SUMMARY:VES Megabrain & ICE.ART - Panel Talk BEYOND VFX
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nTalking About AI Ethics Isn’t Optional — It’s Our Compass. \nIn the age of artificial intelligence\, ethics is no longer a side note — it is the foundation. More than ever\, we must be open\, transparent\, and willing to talk about the implications of the tools we create and use. AI is not just the elephant in the room; it is the unknown future that is already unfolding. If we do not actively challenge the way we think\, question our assumptions\, and evolve our values\, we risk being shaped by technology instead of shaping it ourselves. The conversation about ethics in AI is not optional — it is the compass guiding us toward a future worth living in.\nJoin us for an important and insightful panel talk\, and contribute to the change we all need to shape together.\nDate: November the 26th (Wednesday)\nTime: 9:00 am PT / 12:00 pm EST / 6:00 pm CET\nRSVP here: Zoom Webinar\n\nThis event is open to the public\, and while it’s not exclusively for members\, you will need to log in to RSVP (zoom link above). Space is limited to the first 100 attendees\, so be sure to register and reserve your spot today!\n  \nDR. JANA SEDLAKOVA\nPOSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER\, PHILOSOPHER\, ETHICIST\nJANASEDLAKOVA.ORG | WWW.JANASEDLAKOVA.ORG | LINKEDIN\nX: @_JanaSedlakova_ \nDr. Jana Sedlakova is an interdisciplinary researcher bringing methods and insights from philosophy and ethics into other disciplines\, mainly at the intersection of data science\, health research\, and sustainability. \nShe obtained a PhD from the Institute of Biomedical Ethics and History of Medicine of the University of Zurich\, focusing on the ethics of conversational AI in mental healthcare. In 2022\, she joined a complementary PhD Program “DSI Excellence PhD Program” of the Digital Society Initiative to strengthen her research with the focus on societal and ethical issues of digitalization. She also chairs two scientific communities: Ethics and Health at the DSI. Finally\, she was affiliated with the Institute of Implementation Science in Healthcare to work on more empirically oriented research. \nHer PhD research was at the intersection of medical ethics\, philosophy of technology\, ethics of AI and health research. She focused on the ethical and epistemic challenges and requirements regarding human-AI interaction with a particular focus on healthcare conversational agents used in the context of mental health and well-being. She was also involved in projects focusing on the public legitimacy of digital research methods\, the challenges and requirements of the use of digital unstructured data in health research and the use of technologies in shared decision-making. SUMMARY:Webinar - Retooling Your Career: Transferable Skills and Industry Shifts (Online)
DESCRIPTION:The Visual Effects Society invites you to attend Retooling Your Career: Transferable Skills and Industry Shifts \nClick here to RSVP\nFriday\, June 20 at 11:00AM (PDT)\, 1:00PM (CDT)\, 2:00PM (EDT)\, 7:00PM (BST)\, 8:00PM (CEST)\, 11:30PM (IST)\, Saturday\, June 21 at 4:00AM (AEST)\, 6:00AM (NZST) \n \nThis event is for artists\, producers\, and anyone in VFX or post-production asking\, “What now?”- not because they’ve lost the love\, but because the industry has shifted… and so has life. \nMany of us built careers in the trenches – on set\, in dark suites\, or chained to the render queue. But sometimes\, life throws us a turning point. Maybe it’s the birth of a child. Maybe it’s burnout. Maybe it’s layoffs. Maybe you’ve been at it for decades and you are looking for something new. Whatever the reason\, it’s time to pivot. \nFrom SaaS to tech\, from gaming to education\, we’ll explore how the hard and soft skills honed in VFX can transfer into adjacent industries – ones still rooted in the tools and teamwork we know so well. \nThis panel is about adapting without giving up. It’s about staying close to the craft\, the community\, and the creative spark that brought us here in the first place. \nIf you feel you’ve been cast adrift\, this is a place to listen\, ask questions\, get inspired\, and start charting your next move while the industry regroups.

SUMMARY:Event - Real Applications of Gen AI in VFX (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Screenshot \nClick here to RSVP\nThursday\, February 20\, 2025 at 11:00AM (PST)\, 1:00PM (CST)\, 2:00PM (EST)\, 7:00PM (GMT)\, 8:00PM (CET)\, Friday\, February 21\, 2025 at 12:30AM (IST)\, 6:00AM (AEST)\, 8:00AM (NZST) \nArtificial Intelligence is already making its way into VFX workflows\, but how much of it is actually useful? What’s practical today\, and what’s still evolving? The Visual Effects Society presents a discussion exploring how Generative AI (Gen AI) is being used in VFX right now – what’s working\, what’s challenging\, and where things are headed. \nThis panel features professionals who are actively exploring AI in their creative and technical work. Each will share insights into how they are integrating AI into their process—what’s effective\, what’s experimental\, and what they see on the horizon. \nMinta Carlson – As an avant-garde in the AI art movement\, Minta has developed and refined workflows that integrate AI tools seamlessly into the creative process\, bridging traditional artistic techniques with AI-driven enhancements. She specializes in training Low-Rank Adaptation models (LoRAs) to fine-tune AI for specific artistic styles and production needs\, optimizing AI-assisted illustration\, animation\, and VFX pipelines. \nJim Geduldick – Visual Effects Supervisor\, filmmaker  and technology innovator whose exploration of AI\, machine learning\, and computer vision has expanded the possibilities of storytelling\, visual effects\, and content creation. By harnessing AI technologies\, Jim has pushed creative boundaries and continues to be a trailblazer in the rapidly evolving VFX\, realtime and filmmaking landscape. \nMartin Nebelong – Concept artist and digital sculptor\, exploring AI’s role in creative workflows. He will discuss the potential of video-to-video AI in enhancing 3D animation and augmented reality storytelling. Martin will provide examples of his use of Sora’s video-to-video capabilities and Runway’s AI-powered tools in his work. \nDon Allen Stevenson III – A creative technologist\, futurist\, and author who bridges art and cutting-edge technology. As a speaker\, consultant\, and Masterclass instructor\, Don has worked with Apple\, Meta\, Adobe\, and OpenAI. Through his book Make A Seat and TED talks\, he empowers others to innovate and thrive in an increasingly digital world. \nModerated by VES Education & Outreach Committee Chair Ben Lock\, Animation and VFX Producer specializing in AI production strategy \n  \nThis panel isn’t about speculation. It’s about the tools and techniques that VFX artists\, technologists\, and creatives are actively experimenting with. Whether you’re already using AI or just trying to understand its potential\, this discussion will offer insights into how AI is shaping the creative process and problem-solving in VFX. \nWhy this Matters \nAI tools are appearing in concept design\, animation\, world-building\, and VFX workflows. Some offer new creative possibilities\, while others present technical and artistic challenges. This session will focus on how AI fits into VFX today – what’s useful\, what’s still in development\, and how artists are adapting to these changes. \nThis Event will Cover: \n\nConcept Design – How AI assists in visual exploration by generating variations quickly\, allowing for faster iteration in the early stages of development.\nTraining AI – The use of LoRAs for bespoke model training\, enabling AI tools to adapt to specific artistic styles and production needs.\nReal-Time World Building – How AI\, combined with VR and gameplay hardware\, is being used to create dynamic environments and interactive filmmaking experiences.\nVFX Tools – How AI-powered tools are being incorporated into compositing\, animation\, and rendering workflows within traditional VFX pipelines.\n\nWho Should Attend? \nIf you’re a VFX artist\, supervisor\, producer\, or technologist\, this session will provide a balanced\, professional discussion on the role of AI in VFX. Whether you’re hands-on with AI or just trying to keep up with the latest developments\, this is a chance to hear how artists and technologists are working with these tools. \nWhat to Expect \nThe session will include presentations from each panelist\, followed by a moderated discussion and audience Q&A. The focus is on practical insights and real experiences\, not marketing pitches-just honest discussion about what AI can and can’t do in VFX today.
