“Cinematic Design Thinking: How to think like a Director

Insights from an accomplished cross-industry/cross-discipline Visual-Emotional Storyteller. How universal storytelling principles apply across different visual-stortyelling media. Understanding WHY to inform HOW you can best impact the audience.

Mark Cordell Holmes

Pixar, EA, Maxis, Google, Facebook creative leader

Mark Cordell Holmes is a cross-industry/cross-discipline Art & Creative Director specializing in Visual & Emotional Storytelling across visual-narrative media.
With 16 years in the Pixar art department, Mark’s contributions spanned the studio’s golden age–from A Bug’s Life to Monster’s University, with significant contributions to The Incredibles (Set & Graphic design), WALL-E (Graphics Art Direction), and the short, Lifted (Production Design).
Spanning 16 years in Games & Tech, Mark creatively led interactive audience experiences across Mobile, Console, Browser, HD/PC, AR & VR for such companies as Electronic Arts, Maxis, Google and Facebook.
As a multi-disciplined Visual Artist & Designer, Writer, Narrative Designer, amateur Game Designer and Instructor, Mark has synthesized his learnings through a lens of pluralistic dualisms–Creator vs Consumer; Art vs Craft; Artistry vs Commerce; Story vs Image; Text vs Subtext; Authenticity vs Universality; Intent vs Execution–as a matrix to help creators make informed choices for HOW they want to impact their audience, and WHY.
Employing a Design- and System-Thinking framework, Mark inspires others to holistically think like a director in crafting works that are not just entertaining–but authentic, innovative, deeply engaging and universally resonant. Whether you are a storyteller or craftsperson, lead or executor, student or veteran, Cinematic Design Thinking invites you to become more impactful and thus valuable in your role creating or supporting visual-storytelling audience experiences, whatever your medium.
