An Introduction to the Digital Intermediate
Filmmakers use all their senses and tools to manipulate reality into something beautiful on the screen. They add lights on the set, color time at the lab, and create incredible visual effects. Now Digital Mastering adds another bow to their quiver. The Phillips Spirit Datacine digitizes film, creating a Digital Intermediate that allows cinematographers to change a sunny day to a raining night, turn green grass to brown, or change most of their color film to sepia. The possibilities are infinite.
Sarah Priestnall, Director of Operations, Digital Mastering Division, Cinesite, Inc. will introduce us to the features and processes of the Datacine, showing some recently completed projects and answering questions about resolution, color, cost and the implications for the future as influenced by this process.
Director Mark Osborne will further elucidate the process by talking about using the Datacine for his film “Dropping Out.”
