Executive Committee Positions
The Executive Committee (EC) are the five elected representatives of the Board of Directors who work closely with the Executive Director to manage the affairs of the VES. Executive Committee members meet several times per month and often lead strategic initiatives. Be sure you have time to commit to these roles before submitting yourself as a candidate.
Please review the description of each EC position before deciding which role(s) you wish to apply for:
VES BOARD CHAIR – The Chair shall preside over all Membership meetings, as well as meetings of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee.
The criteria to be Board Chair as set forth in the VES Policies are as follows:
- Candidates for Board Chair must have served on the Board in the previous year AND
- Must have served on the Executive Committee for a minimum of 1 year during the past 3 years OR the candidate must have served on the board for 3 of the last 5 years (including alternates).
Insights from the previous Board Chairs include:
- VES Board Chair is a pivotal role for the Society that is both rewarding and humbling.
- The Chair runs the Board meetings according to Robert’s Rules. The Chair must have the time to hold weekly meetings with the Executive Director, monthly EC meetings, bi-monthly Board meetings, and bi-monthly all Sections meetings. The Chair will host many events and needs to be comfortable with public speaking. There may be some travel involved to attend events and conferences.
- It’s important that the Chair represent the best interests of the Society. Talking to all the Sections is essential. The organization is vastly diverse so it can be challenging to keep everyone satisfied. The Chair and Board members should have no personal agenda. The agenda should always be what’s best for the global membership.
- The Chair must be able to listen to all ideas and to do what’s best for the organization, with a thoughtful perspective to be aware of unintended consequences. One needs the ability to be a team player and willing to compromise. It’s helpful to have a thick skin to handle criticism; a sense of humor; and be willing to help VES grow and improve.
- Be aware that every initiative or idea cannot be acted on right away. Often new initiatives require resources, staffing and planning.
1st and 2nd VICE CHAIRS – The Vice Chair receiving the highest number of votes shall, in the absence or disability of the Chair, perform the duties and exercise the powers of the Chair, and shall have other duties, as are or shall be imposed upon said officers by statute, the Bylaws and the Board of Directors. The Vice Chairs shall officiate in the order in which they are elected.
SECRETARY – The Secretary shall take (or cause to be taken), keep and maintain the minutes of all meetings and proceedings of the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee and the Membership of the Corporation. The Secretary shall supervise and be responsible for giving due notice of Board and EC meetings.
TREASURER – In coordination with the VES Controller, the Treasurer shall be the Chief Financial Officer of the Corporation. The Treasurer shall ensure the collection and deposit of all funds of the Corporation. The Treasurer shall keep and maintain (or cause to be kept and maintained) all funds and accounts and the books and ledgers of the Corporation.
